About Fresh Iowa Mushrooms

Growing fresh Iowa mushrooms started as a hobby for my husband in 2003. It was something to keep him busy during the winter months. Fresh mushrooms also became a great addition to the hunted wild game we'd get each season.

All mushrooms have a different growing processes. With all of the different types of fresh mushrooms we had to choose from, we dabbled in growing many of the different kinds. Almost overnight our friends and family started asking for fresh mushrooms.

On a constant basses we began to buy more equipment so we could grow more fresh mushrooms. Then more and more and more and more. Over the course of time we realized that we had spent so much money on equipment that I had enough to go into business. We decided that we where going to have to start making money or we would have to stop.

We started going to farmers markets in 2005. Not knowing how to do any of the business side of growing fresh mushrooms we jumped in to it with a "sink or swim" attitude. I had a relatively small amount of produce to attend Cedar Rapids IA farmers markets, but went any way.

It cost us more for the booth rent then our Mushrooms, Berries, and Aspaeagus sales made us, but we both had other jobs and we where determined to make our new business work!

After just one year (2006) we really started with the growth of our mushrooms and they always sold. From that point everything went to the mushroom gods and that is how we are here today.
